An extraction is the removal of a tooth, usually because of disease, trauma or crowding. This procedure usually involved little or no discomfort.
If you need to have a tooth extracted, your dentist will first numb the tooth. The tooth is actually "wiggled" out, rather than pulled. After the extraction, your dentist will make some recommendations for post-operative care. A small amount of bleeding is normal and expected. The blood clot will form in the tooth socket; this will help the socket heal better.
If you take any blood-thinning medications, such as daily aspirin or coumadin, or have taken medication for osteoporosis, such as Fosamax, please let your dentist know before an extraction.
Remember, when having an extraction, today's modern procedures and follow up care (as recommended by your dentist) are there for your benefit and comfort.
